The Hard Work in London leads to ……………… to a Huge Cupcake!!!!
It was a very interesting weekend the one I spent in London with Megan Vuong and other seventeen elite Ontario swimmers. At the Train to Compete Camp lead by Swim Ontario Provincial Mentor Coach Dean Boles, I got confirmation (if it was needed!!) that in Mississauga we are doing a very good job with our swimmers and that we focus on the same concepts that the elite swimming in Ontario does!! During the 3 hour sessions in the water a lot of attention went on long underwater, strong kicking, distance per stroke and hard swimming in the second part of a race. All concept that the MSSAC coaches are familiar with since we are working with on a daily bases for long time. And it was nice to see that Megan was among the best for most of these skills. The camp was not only focus on the work in the water but also in the gym. We had a fantastic 4 hour dryland session run by Steve Topham with over 30 different drills to make the core stronger without losing in flexibility. During this session every swimmers worked really hard and always with a sense of enjoyment and gratification. This is definitely an area were at MSSAC we can get better and I will encourage our head Coach Mike Rutledge to have Steve coming over to teach our coaches and swimmers how fun a productive dryland could be.
Another area we tackle during the 3 day camp was for the swimmers to the understanding and applying personal responsibilities, invisible training and well being. As a mentor in this area we had John Jorgenson, a sort of magician, psicologol and trainer that with games and creative activities showed to the swimmers how important is team bounding, leadership and trust in each other.
Every single area was tackle with success thanks also to the great maturity showed by all 18 swimmers. They all worked hard eager to learn new ways to get better swimmers and better persons. In 3 days I did not hear a single complain, swimmers were always on time and extremely respectful of the coaching staff and the facility and hotel we stayed. Because of such a good example from our Ontario swimmers at the end of the camp we cut them some slack and allowed them to have the best cupcakes in all London!!!

a qualifier for the Age Group National in several events, achieved
the standard also in the 400 free (4:57.72) and 200 fly (2:44.69)

Congradulations MSSAC!!

At the beginning of the 2010/11 swim season the coaching staff set a goal of 40 Provincial Qualifiers and over the Central Region weekend and the MSSAC Time Trial weekend this goal was realized. MSSAC will be sending 41 athletes to the Short Course Junior Provincial Championships.
We would also like to recognize that we had some additional swimmers make Provincial qualifying standards but where just short on pre requisites. We would also like to recognize the fact that the Provincial Team was produced by 6 different groups. Gold, Silver I, Silver II, Bronze I, Bronze II, and Senior Groups all had swimmers make Provincials.
In addition to our Provincial Team we would like to celebrate the results from our Region meet and recognize that MSSAC had 73 swimmers compete at the meet and this is with the new tougher “B” standard this year unlike the “C” standard last year, and last year we had only 67 swimmers at the meet.
This is showing excellent progress and improvement in the club performance and we look to continue to develop the Regional swimmers toward the Provincial and the Provincial swimmers to the National level. Congratulations to the swimmers and coaches and good luck to the swimmer heading to Nepean for the Provincial Championship.

Explanation from Swim Ontario regarding the 2011 Short Course Junior Provincial Results. It is an unfortunate situation that the results were compromised but we need to look forward and focus on the meets ahead.
Message to the Swim Ontario membership
It has been brought to the attention of Swimming Canada, and Swim Ontario, that the Nepean Sportsplex as configured for the 2011 Ontario SC Jr. Provincial Swimming Championships on Feb 24-28 has been deemed “non-compliant” with FINA and SNC facility regulations (length of course).
Under the authority of Swimming Canada and Swim Ontario for sanctioning swimming competitions and results; and in collaboration with the Chair of the Ontario Swimming Officials Association (OSOA), and Canadian/FINA senior officials, the following decisions have been determined.
 The results of the event will be uploaded into the national results database and will be considered eligible for use (entry and seeding) in Swim Ontario sanctioned competitions only.
 No changes to the placing or awards of the competition will take place.
 All records (World – Para or Able bodied; National - Para, Open or Age Group; Provincial – Open or Age Group, etc.) attempted/applied for, or previously recognized from this event are considered “non-compliant” and will not be recognized as records.
 For future SNC designated competitions the times from the 2011 Ontario SC Junior Provincials will be considered eligible for use of “eligible entry” into the SNC competition however they will not be eligible for seeding purposes. Any times from the event that are used for eligible entry into an SNC designated event will be seeded as “No Time – NT”.
Should any Swim Ontario members require any clarification please contact Swim Ontario via info@swimontario.com.

University of Toronto swimmer Vanessa Treasure gives thanks for the support

Through my many years of competitive swimming in Ontario, Swim Ontario has provided me with numerous opportunities and experiences. I have been privileged to attend multiple Swim Ontario training camps. Not only that, but I am honoured to have been a member of Ontario tour teams as well.  I have been fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to develop as an athlete with the Mississauga Aquatic club. I swam as a member of MSSAC for 11 years. Mike Rutledge was my coach, and friend, for 8 of those years.  When I reflect on all of my proudest moments as a swimmer, Mike is always there in the background standing proud. He has been one of the most influential people in my life. Mike and club swimming as a whole, has not only built a foundation for my future success in swimming, but has also taught me valuable life lessons.

As I make the transition to post secondary education, it is no surprise to me that Swim Ontario continues to support me and my academic and athletic pursuits. I am grateful to have received this scholarship award and it has really helped my finances this year.  This is my first year at the University of Toronto and I couldn’t have picked a better school or team.  Staying in Ontario, and more specifically, choosing U of T was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am training better than ever, and swimming faster. We have a fast team and there is someone for me to train with on every stroke which is ideal for my I.M training. I have already posted several best times this year and we are not even into the championship season yet. University swimming is very exciting and a refreshing change. I am so to be happy here and that is not only reflected in my swimming but also in my academics. I have settled right into university life and learning. I finished my first semester with a 3.9 GPA and my goal for this semester is a 4.0.

I can’t thank everyone at Swim Ontario enough for helping me to continue on my journey to success both athletically and academically. It means a lot to me to have been selected to receive this award over many other phenomenal and deserving athletes. Once again I am truly grateful for the support I have received from Swim Ontario this throughout my swimming career.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Treasure
